After sailing 28 miles south of Phuket, we reach the beginning of the Phi-Phi island group:

Koh Phi Phi Leh

Koh Phi Phi Lee is a great destination for sailing excursionsOn Koh Phi Phi Lee, you’ll be amazed by Maya Bay’s picturesque landscape, with majestic sandstone cliffs harmoniously framing the perfect beach.

Most famous thanks the movie “the Beach,” with Leonardo Di Caprio, Koh Phi Phi Lee is a popular destination for sailing excursions, and it is a perfect rest stop on the way to Phi Phi Don.

Koh Phi Phi Don

Koh Phi Phi DonFramed by impressive sandstone cliffs, Koh Phi Phi Don offers a safe port of anchor in almost all weather conditions.

In addition, on land you’ll find a lively tourist scene: restaurants catering to the most varied tastes, relaxed open-air nightclubs.

There are also a number of textile and souvenir shops, diving schools, and massage studios.

And we recommend a hike to the look-out point between Tonsai Bay and Yongkasem Bay.

Most of all, the view of the bays from up here is truly postcard worthy.

Sailing to Koh Racha Yai

Koh Racha YaiThe Ko Racha Yai island lies 12 miles south of Phuket.

It offers a great anchor bay, with fine sand beaches, crystal clear water, and a new, 5-star hotel and restaurant.

Because Racha is so close to Phuket, it is also a popular destination for snorkeling and diving.

Sailing to Koh Rok Nok

Koh Rok NokAbout 48 miles south of Phuket, we arrive at the Koh Rok Nok islands.

The two marvelous sister islands are separated by a narrow passage. We will drop anchor in this canal, floating in the crystal clear water.

With some of the best snorkeling and diving, a number of beaches which you can reach by kayak, and a hiking trail to a beautiful look-out point, this is an island you can’t miss.

At the shore, you can visit some of the famous phallic shrines.

Koh Lanta and Koh Po

There are also some great local restaurants on the island.

Koh Muk

Koh MukKoh Muk ist an interesting island with marvelous interior lagoons (Hongs), known as “the Emerald Cave.”

Swim through one of the caves, and you’ll find yourself in your own private oasis, with beaches framed by bright cliffs.

The secluded coast is particularly fun to explore by kayak, so you can see all the natural bays, caves, and sand beaches up close.

Koh Ha

Koh HaIn Thai, “Koh Ha” means “Five Islands.”

Koh Ha is a beautiful place to drop anchor for the day, with a small beach and a shallow bay.

Here you can snorkel and kayak in the crystal clear water, and discover amazing coral formations.

Koh Rok Nok and Koh Rok Nai

Koh Rok Nok BeachThese two islands, grouped closely together, are located only a short sailing distance away from Koh Ha Yai.

In the protected canal between the two islands, we’ll find beautiful beaches and crystal clear water.

It’s paradise for drift divers and snorkelers. Except for a small nature reserve station on Koh Rok Nai, the island is uninhabited. Thai fishing boats and a few yachts drift through this idyllic landscape.

Deep in Southern Thailand – Butang Island Group

Butang islandsThe Butang Islands are part of the Tarutao National Park, and they lie about 40 nautical miles southwest of Rok Nok, on the Thailand-Malaysia border.

While most of the islands are uninhabited, there is a sea gypsy village on Koh Lipe, on the northeast side, and a few simple bungalow sites to the south.

The islands offer very interesting hikes. Barry, who is Canadian, runs a small diving school here, and also manages a bakery on the island.

Koh Adang is known for its crystal clear spring water, which comes from an almost year-round mountain spring and provides the island with stable drinking water.

If you have time, enjoy a day or two of natural beauty and peace on the Butang Islands.

Koh Tarutao

Koh Tarutao islandsAbout 30 nautical miles northeast from the Butang Islands lies Koh Tarutao –the biggest of the 51 islands that make up the 300 km² national park, as well as the park’s namesake.

Formerly known as a pirate stronghold, and used as a prison camp after the Second World War because of its remoteness, the island’s remaining ruins and the inhabitants’ folk stories are testament to its infamous past.

You can use a kayak or a dinghy to navigate a river at the north of the island, which takes you deep into the mangrove forest. There are also many beautiful spots up there to drop anchor.

Tarutao’s southern coast is only four nautical miles away from Malaysia’s northernmost island, the duty free island of Langkawi in Malaysia. From there, you can catch a ferry to the mainland or to the Butang Islands.

Tarutao was the setting for “Survivor” the English television series.
